Fact Check Affirms Contrast Between Tillis, Democratic Opponents On Sanctuary Policies

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Yesterday, fact checkers affirmed the contrast between Senator Tillis and his Democratic challengers when it comes to the dangerous sanctuary policies that have allowed violent, illegal immigrants to inflict harm on North Carolinians. Here are a couple of key points from WRAL-Raleigh: 

• “Cunningham and Smith did oppose a bill that would require North Carolina sheriffs to detain people on behalf of ICE.”
• “They said they believe local agencies should have the flexibility to decide for themselves whether to comply.”
• “The Tillis campaign also noted Cunningham’s opposition to a federal bill Tillis introduced. That bill would compel local law enforcement officials to comply with federal detainer requests or face possible civil action by victims and the loss of federal grants.”

“While Senator Tillis has been fighting in Washington to curb the dangerous sanctuary policies that are putting North Carolinians at risk, Cal Cunningham and Erica Smith have made clear that they would stand idly by and allow them to continue,” said Tillis campaign spokesman Andrew Romeo. “There’s only one candidate in this race who is committed to doing everything in his power to keep the people of North Carolina safe – and that is Senator Tillis.”
